“Digital Education Governance – International-Comparative Analyses of Datafication, Digitalization and Automation of Education (Governance)” (since August 2020)

DFG Heisenberg funding (2020-2025) for the further establishment of the research focus Digital Education Governance. Here, in particular, work on three projects:
(1) The effects of digital education governance on educational federalism and democracy;
(2) The productive effects of predictive governance instruments;
(3) The Estonian Education Information System (EEIS) and its embedding in the overall digital system of e-estonia (eesti). Link.

UNBLACK THE BOX”(since fall 2019)

UNBLACK THE BOX is a network initiative founded in 2019 by researchers from educational science, sociology, educational informatics, media and health pedagogy as well as teachers in schools, universities or teacher training and further education. It pursues the goal of enabling educational institutions, teachers and lecturers to face the growing computerization and digitalization of education with enlightened, critical and conscious decision-making and design skills, even without extensive informatics knowledge.

DATAFIED (DATA For and In EDucation). The Construction of School in the Process of Datafication” (since December 2018)

BMBF collaborative project (duration 36 months) to analyze changing relationships in the complex web of roles in schools, ideas of “good schools”, and professionalism through the increasing relevance and integration of digital data. For this purpose, studies will be conducted at four interfaces of the school education system: School Supervision and School ( TP 1, HSU), School Information Systems and School Management ( TP 2, ifib Bremen), Educational Software and Teaching ( TP 3, GEI Braunschweig), and Teachers and Students in the Classroom ( TP 4, DIPF Frankfurt/Main).

Educational Data Management – New Knowledge, Interdependence and Influence Structures in the Context of the Digitalization of Educational Governance” (September 2017-August 2020)

DFG research project (duration 36 months) to explore new systems of educational data management at the federal state/state level comparing Germany/USA. Observation of production and functional contexts in the de- and recontextualization of educational data, information and knowledge as well as questioning digital infrastructures as a novel dimensioning of educational governance.

“Comparing the rise of education standards in the US and Germany” (2013-2014)

Collaborative project with George Washington University in Washington, D.C. (Prof. Dr. Laura Engel) on the comparative analysis of national education standards in Germany with the Common Core State Standards in the USA.
Supported by third-party funding from the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayForInt) and the American Consortium on European Union Studies/EU Center of Excellence Research.

“School Structure Reform in Bremen: Promoters and Obstacles on the Way to an inclusive School System” (03/2014-03/2016)

Article project with Prof. Dr. Rita Nikolai (Humboldt University Berlin). Qualitative analysis of the “major school structure reform” in Bremen (in 2009 and 2010) with a special focus on the inclusion of students with special needs.

“Education, School, Teaching – Transnationalization of Education” (2012-2015)

Comparative analysis of school reforms in Germany, England, Sweden and the USA with reference to the discussion of global convergence versus national-local recontextualization. Together with Prof. Dr. Richard Münch and Dr. Tomas Marttila (University of Bamberg); subproject leadership for USA and Germany, specific focus on the establishment of standards-based school reforms via new networks, including the establishment of national educational standards, accountability and assessment structures, and (new) issues of inclusion.
