Academics

Students at HSU usually study one major. International students may visit classes from all offered majors. Our students do not take single classes. Instead their studies are arranged in modules. Only upon completion of a whole module, credit and a grade will be given.
A module usually consists of several classes. All courses involved in a specific module have to be taken and passed to receive a grade and credit for the whole module.

Some of our modules run over several trimesters with the final exam being held in the last time period. Students who will only be here for parts of the module may not be able to take it as they will not be able to participate in all parts of the module and as such will not be graded/ receive credit.

In some cases, classes can still be attended for a certificate of attendance.

Here are some examples of modules:

Example 1:

Module “Old History”

Time: 1 Trimester

Consists of:

  • one lecture (2 weekly hours, no grade, just attendance)
  • one seminar ( final exam: termpaper)

Students will be graded on the termpaper and receive a pass/fail for the lecture. The whole module will get graded after successful completion of both classes!

Example 2:

Module “International Relations and Foreign Affairs”

Time: 2 Trimesters

Consists of:

  • introductory lecture in fall trimester (2 weekly hours, just attendance)
  • in-depth seminar in the winter trimester (2 weekly hours, term paper)

Students can participate in the lecture but cannot recieve credit, as the examination happens in a later trimester and all parts of the module need to be finished to recieve credit.

Example 3:

Language Class

Time: 3 Trimesters

Consists of:

  • 2-4 weekly class hours in fall
  • 2-4 weekly class hours in winter
  • 2-4 weekly class hours in spring

Unless a course is specifically listed for one trimester, language classes can only be taken for credit when you are enrolled over three trimesters and passed an exam.

Example 4:

Interdisciplinary Studies Module (ISA)

Time: 1 Trimester

Consist of:

  • Seminar of 4-6 class hours on Wednesday OR Friday (set times)
  • or a block seminar on the weekend

These courses always bring 5 ECTS point and can be taken in one trimester. However, usually, you can only choose two, as they are all held either on Wednesday or Friday during the same time period.

Examinations

Possible types of exams:

  • Term papers,
  • essays,
  • presentations,
  • oral exams,
  • written exams,
  • attendance lists,
  • protocols

Time frame for exams:

Some types of examinations, e.g. protocols or presentations are usually part of the running trimester, while final exams like orals, written tests or term papers will be scheduled for the end of the trimester or after.

Teachers will make arrangements for deadlines and requirements in the beginning of the trimester. Make sure to talk to them about it!

Grading

Classes may be graded with a simple pass/ fail.

Otherwise they will be graded within the scale of 1,0 – 5,0 with 1 being very good and 5 being a fail grade:

1,0 =Very good
1,3 = Very good
1,7 =Good
2,0 =Good
2,3 =Good
2,7 = Satisfactory
3,0 = Satisfactory
3,3 =Satisfactory
3,7 =Sufficient
4,0 =Sufficient
5,0 = Fail

Our classes are credited in ECTS points. Points range from 1 to up to 15 points per module.
