LaiLa – Laboratory for intelligent lightweight production

LaiLa1

Today, lightweight structures made of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) make a significant contribution to making aircraft lighter and more fuel-efficient. However, the production of FRP parts is very complex due to the design and the complexity of the manufacturing processes. Within the framework of LaiLa, the production process is to be made much more efficient through digitalisation in the form of modelled and networked production systems supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The central idea of LaiLa is to enable a knowledge transfer from basic research, application-oriented research and development and industrial application in aviation that works in all directions by establishing a laboratory for intelligent lightweight production.

LaiLa2

The validation of LaiLa is carried out on the basis of production-related questions in the area of component production from the aviation sector, for example with a focus on the vertical stabiliser. Through built-up expert knowledge, innovative key technologies are thus brought into current and future production systems in a targeted manner. To do this, it is necessary to digitally model domain knowledge, implement it through machine learning based on data and map it in a digital twin. Based on current series production systems and networked machines, the concept of the smart factory with all interface functions is demonstrated and validated. The laboratory set up as part of the project will also serve as a platform for further training and knowledge transfer and thus sustainably strengthen Germany as a digital location.
