Accompanying research for Charging Infrastructure on Bus Depots

The focus of research at HSU within the project “Accompanying research for Charging Infrastructure on Bus Depots” is energy supply and charging infrastructure for electric bus fleets in Hamburg.

The two public transportation companies in the city, Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HOCHBAHN) and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH), plan a systematic transformation of the existing depots and installation of necessary charging infrastructure for electric buses. Electrification of bus fleets in Hamburg is one of the first projects of that scale in Germany. The German Federal Ministry of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure is funding both projects with 8.6 million Euro.

HOCHBAHN plans to install one part of the necessary charging infrastructure at one of their new bus depots in Alsterdorf which, when built, will be the biggest bus depot in Hamburg. VHH on the other side plans to partially adjust one of their already existing bus depots in Bergedorf and install the charging infrastructure for the future electric buses. Both companies aim to demonstrate a solution for the future emission-free public transportation in big cities.

HSU provides an accompanying scientific research and analyzes the suggested concepts for the infrastructure at both bus depots from the technical point of view. The goal of the research is the analysis and optimization of the two depots in Hamburg, as well as insuring the transferability of these solutions to other depots and other cities. The analysis of standardized charging infrastructure concepts, which are easy to transfer to other locations, helps the fleet-electrification gain momentum. This leads to a better integration of e-buses not only in Hamburg, but also in the rest of Germany.

The accompanying scientific research at the HSU focuses on the following goals:

  • The proof of concept and optimization of the chosen infrastructure concepts, taking into consideration their further development in the coming years
  • Analysis of the solutions with the emphasis on the efficiency and economic feasibility
  • Development of solutions that guarantee economic viability of electric bus depots and provide positive effects on the grid
  • Securing the transferability of the infrastructure concepts to other depots with the focus on analysis and development of standardized energy supply modules
  • Definition of requirements for implementation of standardized solutions for infrastructure at other bus depots (e.g. available grid connection capacity), as well as development of instructions that facilitate that implementation
  • Analysis of the growing electrification of bus fleets in Germany and assessment of their effects on the electrical power system in this country (grid expansion, consumption profile) for three different time periods (2020, 2025, 2030)


The project “Accompanying research for Charging Infrastructure on Bus Depots” has a project duration of three years with the planed project finalization in March 2021.
