Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s funding programme supporting formal and non-formal education, youth activities, and sport. It provides cross-border opportunities for learning, exchange, and cooperation for individuals and organizations across Europe and beyond, contributing to key societal goals such as social inclusion, digitalization, and sustainable development.

The programme is structured around three main actions:

  • Key Action 1 – Learning mobility for individuals: Supports international mobility for students, higher education staff, teachers, trainees, young people, volunteers, and other target groups.
  • Key Action 2 – Cooperation for innovation and exchange of good practices: Promotes strategic partnerships between educational institutions, organizations, and other actors to develop innovative solutions.
  • Key Action 3 – Support for policy reforms and European cooperation: Encourages activities that advance policy development and collaboration at the European level.

Erasmus+ has a total budget of approximately €26.2 billion for the period 2021–2027, aiming to give millions of people the chance to gain international experience.

A key feature of the programme is its broad participation: Erasmus+ is open not only to students at all levels of higher education (including Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral studies) but also to apprentices, teachers across all educational sectors, youth workers, sport practitioners, and other learners. Mobility can include study periods, traineeships, school or vocational education, as well as teaching and training activities.

A significant development is that the United Kingdom will rejoin the Erasmus+ programme in 2027, after temporarily leaving the programme following Brexit.

Further information about Erasmus+ is available on the European Commission’s website and through national Erasmus+ agencies.
