Dr. Deniz Kocak is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Chair of Political Science, in particular Political Theory at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBwH), Associated Member with the Interdisciplinary Research Network “Maritime Security” (iFMS), and Research Associate with the German Institute for Defence and Security Studies (GIDS), Hamburg.

Prior to this, he worked as Senior Scientific Officer with the Department of Risk Communication and with the Unit “Crisis Prevention and Coordination”, German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, as a Lecturer with the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, Freie University Berlin, as Visiting Researcher with the School of Social Sciences (SoSS), Singapore Management University (SMU) as well as a Research Associate with the Project “Exporting the State Monopoly on Violence: Security Governance Transfers to Areas of Limited Statehood“, DFG-Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 700, Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood, Freie University Berlin.

Dr. Kocak is also a political consultant on security governance affairs and has worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). From 2015 to 2020 he has been a Scientific Advisory Council for the EU-funded Horizon 2020 Project “Community Based Policing and Post-Conflict-Police Reform” (ICT4COP). Since 2017 he is a Vetted Expert for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – Regional Service for Africa (RSCA) Governance and Peacebuilding Experts Roster, and since 2021 he is a Member of the Security Sector Reform (SSR) Advisory Network to the United Nations. Since 2022 he is a Steering Committee Member of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) – Standing Group Political Violence.

He studied Political Science and Modern/Contemporary History at the University of Potsdam and the Humboldt-University Berlin, and obtained his doctoral degree (Dr. Phil.) in Political Science at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, Freie University Berlin.
