Dr.–Ing. Niels Demke works as a group leader at the Professorship of Machine Elements and Computer-Aided Product Design in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. He studied automotive engineering at HAW Hamburg and received his doctorate in 2022 from Helmut Schmidt University in the field of computer-aided product development.
His research focuses on the derivation and communication of design intentions to support interdisciplinary collaboration during the early phase of the design process. It centers on the neurobiological processes involved in the explicitation of design intentions between system and context, aiming to derive novel insights for methodical support in design practice.
With a focus on information architectures and assistance systems for integrated product creation, he has worked on several projects in the automotive industry since 2015, both as an employee and in managerial roles. In 2022, he became a founding member of used, an Open Source Community for Sustainable Engineering and Design. He has also been involved with the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure e.V. (VDI) since 2023 and was appointed chairman of Technical Committee 414 Product Planning in 2025. A teaching assignment for Maschinenzeichnen/CAD was granted to him in 2025.
