Silke Bumann arbeitet als Postdoc am Lehrstuhl für Politische Ökonomik und Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung im Team von Prof. Dr. Michael Berlemann. Sie ist Koordinatorin des Projekts „Implications of Climate Change and Climate-induced Disasters for Individuals, Firms and the Insurance Sector (Climate_Affect)“. In dem Projekt geht es um das Wissen und die Einstellungen von Individuen und Unternehmen zum Klimawandel. Ein weiterer Inhalt des Projekts ist die Bedeutung des Versicherungssektors zur Abfederung von Klimarisiken.
Im Rahmen ihrer Forschung verwendet Silke verschiedene Mikrodatensätze, u.a. Gallup World Poll, um zu untersuchen wie bestimmte sozio-demografische Variablen und Extremwetterereignisse die Einstellungen von Individuen zum Klimawandel beeinflussen.

Silke Bumann studierte Volkswirtschaftslehre in Hamburg, Nantes und Edinburgh. Ihre Promotion erhielt sie 2015 von der Universität Groningen für ihre Doktorarbeit zum Thema „Essays on Financial Liberalization“. Im Anschluss begann sie eine Stelle am Max-Planck-Institut für Evolutionsbiologie. Dort arbeitete sie als Postdoc in einem interdisziplinären Team an verschiedenen Projekten, u.a. zum Klimawandel und Kooperation. Seit Januar 2019 ist sie Postdoc am Lehrstuhl für Politische Ökonomik und Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung an der Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg.
