Our beautiful green campus in the east of Hamburg boasts modern infrastructure with a wide range of facilities and services.
Food and Drink
There are a number of eateries on campus, perfect for a cup of coffee with colleagues or a relaxed lunch.
Dining hall
There is an on-campus canteen that serves three meals a day – breakfast, lunch, dinner. The dining hall is closed Friday afternoon to Sunday evening.
You will need a Mensacard to pay for meals at the dining hall, for which you will have to submit a request. Cash payment is accepted only in exceptional circumstances. The current week’s menu is put up on screens on the Red Square in the main building and posted on the HSU mobile app.
Café
For a snack or a hot drink, look no further than “Backparadies Hornung”, the café below the Red Square in the main building. The café serves a range of coffee drinks, sandwiches and pastries.
“Backparadies Hornung” is open 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Thursday and from 8 am to 1 pm on Fridays.
Vending machines
Packaged snacks and a range of drinks are available around the clock from the vending machines on the ground floor on the Red Square.
Officers’ Club
The HSU Officers’ Club is located five minutes’ walk from campus, on the corner of Rodigallee and Holstenhofweg. The Officers’ Club is operated by the University and provides an additional service: it not only serves a range of food and drinks but is also home to a bar area and several function rooms that can be reserved for business meetings or private gatherings and events.
The Officers’ Club is open to all HSU members and guests. The menu is seasonal and changes weekly. Hot food is served Monday to Thursday from noon until 4:30 pm. For the current week’s menu and other relevant information, go to https://www.hsu-hh.de/ohg/
Library
The University Library at HSU is a multi-award-winning and modern academic library that houses some 710,000 titles. It provides literature and information for students and researchers and offers workstations and group workspaces in a pleasant environment.
The library also hosts lectures, exhibitions and events.
Language Training Centre
For those looking to learn or improve their German or another language, HSU has a Language Centre with a wide range of language courses, which is ideal for those staying in Hamburg/at HSU for at least three months.
For the full range of courses available at the Language Centre, go to: https://www.hsu-hh.de/sprachen/
If you are interested in the course for German as a foreign language, please contact Sven Hansen ([email protected]).

HSU also organises a tandem programme. In such programmes, two people with different native languages meet regularly to learn each other’s language. If you are interested in finding a tandem partner, please contact Solène David ([email protected]).
Sports Centre
HSU offers a wide range of sports and exercise facilities and activities. It also has its own indoor swimming pool, several sports halls, a sports field and gyms.
While you are free to use these services and facilities, please check in advance if your health and accident insurance also covers sporting accidents. You are NOT insured through the University!
