Equality, diversity and inclusion in hospitality and tourism

Barbara Sieben and Vanessa S. Bernauer work on this topic in various joint projects. A first project was the conceptual analysis of the “paradoxes of luxury work” (Sieben & Haunschild, 2012) that arise from the dark side of working conditions in the luxury service segment. Based on interviews with service workers and customers in luxury hotels and in first-class service in air travel, Vanessa S. Bernauer investigates together with Barbara Sieben and Axel Haunschild (University of Hannover) the role of emotions and gender for these paradoxes (Bernauer et al., 2017) as well as the enactment of class distinctions in service interactions (Bernauer et al., 2022). In further studies, Vanessa S. Bernauer takes an intersectional perspective (Klarsfeld et al., 2019) on the reproduction of social inequalities through work in the luxury service segment.

Together with Abhishek Bhati and K. Thirumaran (JCU Singapur), Vanessa S. Bernauer widens the perspective on equal opportunities for further workers in hospitality and tourism (H&T). To raise awareness for inequalities in this sector, such as gender, race, and class issues, and to discuss ways to address them, they organized a Professional Development Workshop with the panelists Jean Helms Mills, Albert J. Mills, Dennis Nickson, Renate Ortlieb, Anna Schneider and Chris Warhurst at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (Bernauer et al., 2020). Moreover, they edited a Special Issue on “(In)equalities in hospitality & tourism – Exploring diversity and equity issues” for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal, 42(2).
