Equal opportunities in working life: A comparative analysis of actors and discourses in Germany and Turkey.

This research project is an international collaborative project between Angela Kornau, Barbara Sieben (Helmut Schmidt University), Lena Knappert (VU, Netherlands), Duygu Acar Erdur (Beykent University, Turkey) and Ahu Tatli (Queen Mary University of London, UK). At the core of this project is the analysis of discourses and actors and their influence on equality, diversity and inclusion in working life. We aim to compare Germany and Turkey to better understand how German and Turkish actors deal with diversity and how organizational discourses (re)produce inequalities in working life in relation to different dimensions that are prone to discrimination, such as gender, age or ethnicity. Societal, economic and political characteristics of the respective country are included in the analysis in order to explain the different strategies of the actors and to derive practical recommendations. To this end, qualitative interviews were conducted between 2015-2016 with representatives of governmental organizations, employers’ associations, professional associations, trade unions, civil society organizations and international organizations in Germany and Turkey. Initial results were presented and discussed in July 2016 at a DFG-funded workshop, which took place at Koc University in Istanbul at the invitation of Mustafa Özbilgin.
