Conference and network meeting of diversity researchers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, HSU

Daniela Rastetter (University of Hamburg) and Barbara Sieben (Helmut Schmidt University) invited diversity researchers residing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on June 25th and 26th, 2015 to continue discussing on the topic introduced for the diversity conference and networking meeting at WU Vienna in 2014: “Diversity, diversification and (eroding) solidarity in organizational diversity research: Defining positions and stocktaking in the German-speaking regions”.

The 2015 conference successfully expanded the scope of the network onto researchers and interested persons with various disciplinary backgrounds within business studies, economics, sociology, psychology, legal studies, linguistics, philosophy, ethnology and further diversity relevant areas. This created a platform for interdisciplinary exchange of insights and information and opened a broad fore to discuss gender and diversity issues. The focus was on the following core topics:

  • The relation of gender and diversity: Does gender play a priority role among all diversity dimensions?
  • The debate on equal treatment and equal opportunities: How can diversity research findings be integrated in gender and further equality practice, e.g. in business companies and on a socio-political level?
  • The search for theoretical frameworks: How can workplace diversity and diversity management best be addressed, with approaches and concepts such as intersectionality, discrimination, social inequality, habitus or else?

The multifarious conference program included ‘classical’ presentations with discussion in the plenary, short presentations in smaller groups, round table discussions for paper development and an accompanying poster exhibition. We wish to cordially thank the Minister of Defence Dr. Ursula von der Leyen for her patronage and greetings; further cordial thanks for their greetings and welcome speeches go to Prof. Dr. Wilfried Seidel, President of the HSU, Prof. Dr. Katharina Liebsch, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and last not least to Aydan Özoğuz, Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees, and Integration.
