Professorship for Eastern European and East-Central European History

ohne

From the Oder River to the Pacific, from the Arctic Ocean to the Orient – many an apocalyptic horseman has passed through our area of research. It is a vast region in which we are looking for traces of the past. Our research is shaped by the microhistorical perspectives of everyday, colonial, environmental, technical and political history, and in our teaching we attempt to explain those features of Eastern European history that are unfamiliar and unusual.

We cover the entire historical spectrum of Eastern European and East-Central European history but primarily focus on the history of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, as well as Poland and Ukraine since the 18th century. Biographical and real-world approaches guide our research work, which is not limited to Eastern Europe but which explores transnational relations as well.
