Professorship of Energy Process Engineering

Welcome to the website of the “Energy Process Engineering ” group at the Institue of Thermodynamics!

More than half of the world’s final energy consumption is used for heating. To achieve a truly sustainable, ecological, and economically efficient energy future, the supply of renewable electricity must therefore be complemented by innovative solutions for renewable heat.

Our research addresses this challenge by advancing the understanding and application of reversible gas–solid reactions for thermochemical energy storage and heat transformation. We investigate fundamental reaction mechanisms, the interplay between material structure and properties, and perform thermophysical characterisation and targeted material modification to optimise process control.Building on these material-level insights, our work extends to reactor-scale characterisation, process modelling, and process integration at both technical and pilot scales.

Our research thus combines materials science and process engineering — from the development and functionalisation of thermochemical storage materials to the design and realisation of demonstration and pilot plants. In doing so, we contribute to the development of efficient and sustainable heat management technologies that are essential for the energy transition.
