Study Programs

Study concept

Although studying at a Bundeswehr university does not differ from public universities in terms of content, there are a few special features.

Academic year divided into trimesters

A trimester lasts 12 weeks, the academic year consists of three trimesters, followed by a three-month lecture-free period. Because a trimester is approx. two weeks shorter than an average semester at a public university, the number of hours per week that a student at HSU/UniBw H spends on courses is slightly higher, so that a trimester is roughly equivalent to a semester in terms of length.

Master’s degree in four years

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses are generally structured as intensive courses, so that both courses are studied in a consecutive sequence over a total of four years. Intensive courses allow students to earn up to 75 credit points per academic year.

Material security

Student officer candidates and officers also receive their salary (depending on age, rank and marital status) during their studies. Civilian students can also benefit from the particularly good conditions at HSU/UniBw H if their tuition fees are covered, e.g. by a company or a foundation.

Campus University

Bundeswehr students live in comfortable halls of residence directly on campus (Holstenhofweg) or in the nearby residential area of the university (Stoltenstraße). Normally only students from the same subject area but from different years live on the same residential floor (this is what our students call the corridor or floor on which they live), so that the older students can support the younger students.

In addition to the facilities for research and teaching, the campus is also home to libraries, the canteen, sports facilities, doctors and dentists and a Protestant and a Catholic parish. This ensures short distances and saves a lot of time, which can be used for more important things.

Small group concept

Studying in small groups is also an integral part of the ambitious study concept at a Bundeswehr university and helps to ensure that the course can be completed within the standard period of study. With the exception of a few lectures, most courses take place in groups of no more than 25 students.

Above-average facilities

In order for the trimester system to work and the tight standard period of study to be adhered to, it is essential to have particularly good human and material resources.

Quality assurance and development

The university has extensive and established quality assurance processes that are firmly anchored in the central and decentralized committees. The degree programs are the responsibility of the faculties, which are therefore also primarily responsible for quality assurance and development in studies and teaching. They are supported by the study program representative. All cross-faculty processes relating to studies are brought together here.

ISA – Interdisciplinary study components

Interdisciplinary study components also exist at public universities. The term “Studium generale” is used there to describe what students can study on a part-time basis. At HSU/UniBw H, however, the ISA minor is compulsory.
