IO-Link Wireless

A Milestone in Industrial Communication: IEC 61139-3

The EMT Chair played a key role in the design, metrological verification, and standardization of IO-Link Wireless. In November 2023, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published the standard IEC 61139-3:2023 (Single-Drop Digital Communication Interface – Part 3: Wireless Extensions).

Deterministic Real-Time

  • Cycle time: < 5 ms (scalable to less than 2 ms for time-critical control applications).
  • Deterministic F/TDMA (Frequency- and Time-Division Multiple Access) access method.

Unparalleled Reliability

  • Packet error rate (PER): < 10⁻⁹ (comparable to wired cable buses).
  • Frequency hopping and adaptive channel blacklisting algorithms in the 2.45-GHz ISM band.

Scalability & Density

  • Up to 120 wireless devices per cell (divided into up to 3 W-Master tracks).
  • Full backward compatibility with IO-Link V1.1 (Sensor Profile level).

Standardization & Funding Background

  • Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) under the WIPANO funding guidelines (Project IOLW-4-IEC).
  • Continued in close cooperation with the IO-Link Community / PROFIBUS User Organization e.V. (PNO) and the DKE (German Commission for Electrical Engineering).
  • Industry partners: Festo AG & Co. KG, Balluff AG / GmbH.
