·       Computational methods for designing complex material systems, including virtual material design and simulation of processing technologies for alloys or composites (modeling of thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions, finite elements)

·       Information driven interface design for tailored properties, reaching beyond bulk properties via functionalization of surfaces and control of interfaces, e.g. to facilitate particular (laser) light-matter interactions for metamaterials or in additive manufacturing. (ab initio methods, molecular dynamics)

·       Scale bridging and integration of computational methods, to understand the relationship between structure, micro-structure and properties, as well as to support the integration of functionalities on different scales (link molecular dynamics and continuum methods, multi-scale simulation)
