At Helmut Schmidt University, the Chair of Electrical Measurement Engineering operates a private 5G Standalone (5G-SA) network. In cooperation with Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson, a state-of-the-art infrastructure has been created that serves as a real-world laboratory for researching time-critical 5G industrial and security applications.
Key Functions of the 5G Real-World Lab
Exclusive Frequency Band
Operation within the Federal Network Agency’s private industrial allocation band (3.7 to 3.8 GHz). This ensures completely interference-free operation, independent of public cellular networks.
Deterministic TSN
Integration of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) directly into the 5G protocol stack to ensure guaranteed latencies of less than 10 ms for closed-loop control systems.
Edge-Cloud Integration
Local computing capabilities located directly on campus for lag-free processing of computationally intensive AI image processing and sensor fusion algorithms.
