Schaal ist seit 2009 Inhaber des Lehrstuhls f\u00fcr Politische Theorie an der Helmut-Schmidt-Universit\u00e4t, Hamburg. Seit 2017 leitet der den interdisziplin\u00e4ren Forschungsschwerpunkt Maritime Sicherheit (iFMS) an der <abbr title=\"Helmut Schmidt Universit\u00e4t\">HSU<\/abbr>, der aus einer Kooperation mit dem BMVg entstanden ist und die Abteilung Politik II 1 in allen Fragen Maritimer Sicherheit wissenschaftlich beraten soll. Seit 2020 ist er Ko-Vorstand des German Institute for Defense and Strategic Studies (GIDS) in Hamburg, dem Think Tank der Bundeswehr f\u00fcr sicherheitspolitische Fragestellungen in strategischer Perspektive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Er studierte Politikwissenschaft, Germanistik und Philosophie an der FU Berlin und arbeite anschlie\u00dfend an der FU Berlin, der <abbr title=\"Technische Universit\u00e4t\">TU<\/abbr> Dresden sowie der Universit\u00e4t Stuttgart, anschlie\u00dfend war er Heisenbergstipendiat der DFG. Gary S.
