Prof. Dr. Ellen Kollender (Former)

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Intercultural and Comparative Education at Helmut Schmidt University. My research focuses on education policy, school development, and the professionalization of pedagogues with regard to inequalities in migration societies, with an emphasis on racism and intersectional discrimination in their interactions with neoliberal transformations in the state, school, and society. As part of my doctoral project, I studied racist exclusions of ‘Muslim and immigrant parents’ in the German school system. Another focus of my research concerns current formations of inclusion and exclusion of ‘refugee children and youth’ in the international educational regime and in the context of the so-called EU-Turkey Deal. In addition, my research deals with the role of civil society initiatives in shaping education systems and spaces in Germany and Turkey that are sensitive to discrimination, as well as with questions of transnational (educational) solidarity.

From September 2019 to December 2021, I was a Mercator IPC Fellow at the Istanbul Policy Center of Sabancı University (Turkey). My Ph.D. project was supported by a doctoral scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation (2012 to 2016). Within the framework of various research projects and publications, I evaluated and developed approaches for anti-racist teacher education and inclusive school transformation, and provided training and counseling on diversity strategies for civil and state actors.
