DESCRIPTION:»Networks in changing business ecosystems«\nSYMPOSIUM THEME\nUnderstanding how firms and other stakeholders cooperate and exploit networked resources is the\ncore agenda of this research symposium. Increasingly\, owning resources appears to be less\nrelevant to contemporary organisations than having access to resourceful networks. \nBusinesses need to consider the interplay between local activities in regional clusters and those embedded in global value chains in turbulent times. Their various value creation activities may follow\ndifferent organisational principles – exchange modes vary between market\, hierarchy and cooperative governance forms. The notion of cultivating and accessing resourceful networks thus is significant. Business activities extend beyond the focal firm and into a dynamic relational space which connects stakeholders\, other firms and industry participants in changing ecosystems. \nThe organisers of the research symposium have the aim to bring together researchers from diverse\nbackgrounds to share knowledge and insights into the topic of networks in changing business\nenvironments. Building on this interdisciplinary exchange we seek to establish a broad cooperative\nresearch agenda about the contemporary role of businesses in an increasingly networked world. \nINVITATION TO ATTEND\nThe symposium is primarily held in-person in Hamburg (Germany). However\, we also offer the\npossibility to join online. Hence\, the symposium will be in a hybrid-mode. \nINVITED TOPICS\nWe are interested in developing knowledge about the role of relational resources in a networked\nenvironment within changing business ecosystems.\nWe invite papers from a wide range of multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral approaches in the following topic areas: \nEcosystems and transformation \n– Ecosystems in regenerative economies\n– Sustainability-oriented strategies\n– Stakeholder engagement in ecosystems\n– Challenge-led innovation\n– Regional resources/locational advantage\n– Resilience in ecosystems\, networks & value chains\n– Entrepreneurship in regional networks \nORGANISATIONAL MATTERS\nThe symposium will be a combination of keynote\nspeeches\, paper presentations and highly\ninteractive sessions. However\, this is by no means new territory for organisational theory. Instead\, the problem of adaptation and contingency in the (organisational) environment has been one of\, if not the central issue in organisational theory for more than half a century. Flat hierarchies\, decentralisation and the organisation of networks and value c hains are just as much part of old and new research catalogues as strategic planning\, the creation of redundancy and the management of innovation. Finally\, Karl Weick’s groundbreaking work on high-security organisations\, which brought the management of the unexpected to the forefront of attention\, should also be mentioned. \nConceptually\, organisational theory is therefore not unprepared. However\, it is necessary to examine which of the concepts are still viable\, what further and new developments the theory has to offer\, and which gaps need to be closed. In the context of permacrisis conditions – climate stress\, geopolitical instability\, demographic shifts\, technological disruption\, and legitimacy crises – it becomes essential to ask how organisations and social systems adapt\, transform\, and sometimes fail. \nAbove all\, however\, there is also the empirical question of the extent to which organisations could not only be resilient in theory\, but also (are able to) manage risks\, uncertainty and the unexpected in practice. We particularly invite work that interrogates the tensions between resilience discourse and resilience reality\, including performative uses of resilience\, its managerialisation\, and potential unintended consequences. In this context\, it will be necessary to take into account\, both\ntheoretically and empirically\, that functional failure in societies under stress not only endangers organisations\, but also social (sub)systems and calls into question the legitimacy of organisational society as a whole. \nAgainst this background\, we want to present and discuss topics such as \n• Social and organisational resilience\n• Resilience of value chains and networks\n• Managing the unexpected\n• Security and precaution\n• Disaster control\n• Cyber security\n• Resilience and social inequality\n• Digital infrastructures\, AI-driven vulnerabilities\, and systemic risk\n• Institutional trust\, legitimacy\, and the politics of resilience\n• Resilience narratives\, framing\, and sensemaking \nThe list of keywords is by no means exhaustive; it serves as an invitation for theoretical\, conceptual\, and empirical contributions across sociology\, management studies\, public administration\, economics\, psychology and related disciplines. \nDeadline\nContributors to the seminar at the IUC Dubrovnik submit an extended abstract (1\,000 – 1\,500words) by 15 February 2026 electronically via email to Rebekka Hensen (rebekka.hensen@hsuhh.de).
