Bernauer work on this topic in various joint projects. A first project was the conceptual analysis of the &#8222;paradoxes of luxury work&#8220; (Sieben &amp; Haunschild, 2012) that arise from the dark side of working conditions in the luxury service segment. Based on interviews with service workers and customers in luxury hotels and in first-class service in air travel, Vanessa S. Bernauer investigated together with Barbara Sieben and Axel Haunschild (University of Hannover) the role of emotions and gender for these paradoxes (Bernauer et al., 2017) as well as the enactment of class distinctions in service interactions (Bernauer et al., 2022). On this basis, the authors developed the concept of &#8222;gendered class work&#8220; (Bernauer et al., 2023; Sieben et al., 2025) that explains the reproduction of inequalities\u00a0in luxury service work. From a critical management perspective, the concept highlights the highly gendered nature of class work in luxury service encounters and conceptualizes intersectional patterns of the enactment and reproduction of status differences between service customers and workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Abhishek Bhati and K. Thirumaran (JCU Singapur), Vanessa S. Bernauer widens the perspective on equal opportunities for further workers in hospitality and tourism (H&amp;T). To raise awareness for inequalities in this sector, such as gender, race, and class issues, and to discuss ways to address them, they organized a Professional Development Workshop with the panelists Jean Helms Mills, Albert J. Mills, Dennis Nickson, Renate Ortlieb, Anna Schneider and Chris Warhurst at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (Bernauer et al., 2020); and they edited a special issue on the topic for <em>Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal<\/em> (Bernauer et al., 2023).\u00a0Moreover, together with Nellie Swart (University of South Africa) and K. Thirumaran, Vanessa S.
