DESCRIPTION:4:00-5:00: Scientific Talk by Surya Kiran Peravali (HSU/UniBw H)Design and Optimization of Nanoparticle Injectors for XFEL Experiments Using Multiscale Simulation MethodsX-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs)\, operated at DESY\, generate extremely intense and ultrashort X-ray pulses that enable imaging of matter at atomic and nanometer length scales. One important application of XFELs is single-particle diffractive imaging (SPI)\, a technique that aims to determine the three-dimensional structure of individual nanoparticles\, viruses\, and biomolecules without the need for crystallization. In SPI experiments\, particles are injected into the XFEL beam in free flight\, and diffraction patterns are recorded before X-ray pulse destroys the sample\, a concept known as diffraction before destruction. A central challenge in SPI is sample delivery: The injector must provide a dense\, well-collimated beam of isolated particles with minimal background gas load. Achieving this is non-trivial because the carrier-gas flow inside injector systems spans a wide range of regimes\, from continuum flow at high pressure to highly rarefied conditions near the interaction region. Accurate modeling of such systems therefore requires methods that go beyond classical computational fluid dynamics. In this talk\, a multiscale simulation framework for nanoparticle injector design is presented\, focusing on aerodynamic lens systems (ALS) and their combination with cryogenically cooled buffer-gas cells (BGC). The approach couples continuum Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method\, allowing molecular-scale effects to be resolved only where necessary while retaining computational efficiency elsewhere. The coupled simulation methodology is installed on HSUper and most of the simulations are carried out on this HPC cluster. Special attention is given to particle-gas interaction modeling: Several drag-force formulations are evaluated\, and a relaxation-based correction is introduced to improve particle-trajectory predictions in transitional and rarefied flow regimes. The framework is validated against experimental measurements from ALS\, BGC\, and combined BGC-ALS injectors operated at XFEL facilities. Results show that the hybrid CFD-DSMC approach significantly improves agreement with experiments compared to conventional CFD. In particular\, cryogenic BGC-ALS configurations enhance the focusing of protein-sized nanoparticles by reducing thermal velocities and Brownian motion\, leading to improved beam collimation and injector performance. DESCRIPTION:16:00-17:00: Scientific Talk by Laura Linder (HSU/UniBw H) \n\n\n\nFEM Simulation of TPMS Gyroid under multiaxial-loading: a comparison of solids and different shell elements \n\n\n\nDue to a range of factors\, including climate change\, raw material shortages\, increasing demand for comfort\, and cost considerations\, lightweight construction has become a key focus in industries such as automotive\, aviation\, and defence. \n\n\n\nTriply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures\, like the Gyroid\, are a type of sheet-based metamaterial distinguished by the interaction between their geometric design and the intrinsic properties of the material they are made of. Their mathematically defined topology\, along with favourable mechanical performance and thermal conductivity\, has attracted growing interest in recent research [1]. Sheet-based metamaterials provide superior mechanical properties compared to strut-based metamaterials\, making them particularly valuable for lightweight construction and impact-resistant applications [2]. However\, not all applications can be adequately assessed through experiments alone due to constraints like time\, cost\, material availability and feasibility. In these cases\, simulations become a critical tool for evaluating performance. Simulations offer the advantage of providing detailed insights into the behaviour of materials and structures under various loading conditions without the need for costly and time-consuming experiments. However\, the accuracy and reliability of these simulations are highly dependent on many factors among them: the material parameters used and the choice of element types. \n\n\n\nElement types play a crucial role in FEM simulations. In the context of TPMS structures\, simulations may require the use of both shell elements and solid elements depending on the specific requirements of the model. Shell elements are often used to represent thin-walled structures\, such as the surfaces of the TPMS Gyroid\, and are beneficial in capturing bending and stretching behaviours with fewer degrees of freedom. These elements are computationally efficient\, especially when modelling large-scale structures. In contrast\, solid elements are used to model the volumetric behaviour of materials and are typically employed when a more accurate representation of internal stress distributions\, strain\, and failure modes is necessary. Solid elements provide more a higher level of detail\, especially in areas where load concentrations or complex geometries are present. \n\n\n\nTo ensure the accuracy of the simulations\, it is essential to compare the results obtained from both types of elements with experimental data. This comparison helps to validate the simulation models and refine the boundary conditions\, ensuring that the predictions made by the FEM simulations are as close to real-world behaviour as possible and helps for a better understanding of the performance of TPMS Gyroid structures. DESCRIPTION:16:00-17:00: Scientific Talk by Philipp Marienhagen (HSU/UniBw H) \n\n\n\nThermodynamic properties of quantum fluids: Path integral Monte Carlo simulations of helium and neon using ab initio potentials \n\n\n\nThe accurate theoretical prediction of thermodynamic properties of atoms and molecules with small mass such as helium and neon requires the consideration of quantum effects of the nuclei. Path integral simulations\, based on Feynman’s formulation of quantum mechanics\, provide a method to treat nuclei quantum-mechanically within a classical simulation without uncontrolled approximations. We have recently derived equations for all relevant thermodynamic properties for the path integral framework. With the derived expressions\, thermodynamic properties such as the speed of sound or Joule-Thomson coefficient can now be calculated fully incorporating quantum effects without uncontrolled approximations. \n\n\n\nSimulations are performed for neon and helium using highly accurate ab initio potentials accounting for both pairwise and non-additive three-body interactions. We validate our method for both fluids on the supercritical 80 K isotherms and observe an excellent agreement with recent\, precise experimental speed-of-sound data as well as the reference equations of state confirming our approach. DESCRIPTION:Over the past two years\, the HSUper Workshop has become a recurring opportunity for both HPC newcomers and advanced users at HSU to build skills and competencies in using HPC resources—particularly the HSUper. This year’s edition will take place October 16–17\, 2025\, featuring a combination of hybrid and on-site formats. \n\n\n\nUnlike previous years\, the focus will not be solely on knowledge transfer. Instead\, the workshop emphasizes peer-group-based collaboration\, problem-solving\, and the practical implementation of individual solutions. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, October 16\, participants will join a hybrid tutorial format designed to help them refresh their skills and close knowledge gaps using self-guided materials available on the HPC Portal. \n\n\n\nOn Friday\, October 17\, attendees will work in small groups tailored to their specific needs\, experience levels\, and application areas. Each group will be supported by one or more HPC experts and receive access to resources on the HSUper system. The goal is to collaboratively address research-specific challenges and implement working solutions\, fostering both individual autonomy and mutual support within the groups. \n\n\n\nTo enable this tailored experience\, a detailed registration process will begin shortly. DESCRIPTION:16:00-17:00: Scientific Talk by Guillaume De Nayer (HSU/UniBw H): Impact of Extreme Weather on Civil Engineering Structures: High-Fidelity Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulations \n\n\n\nDue to climate change\, extreme weather events – such as strong wind gusts – are becoming increasingly significant in the design of modern civil engineering structures. Lightweight and thin-walled structures are especially vulnerable to wind-induced loads and can be severely damaged or even destroyed. Therefore\, it is essential to develop and evaluate numerical simulation methods suited for such fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems.An FSI problem typically consists of three components: the fluid domain\, the structural domain\, and the coupling between them. For structures exposed to outdoor conditions\, the surrounding airflow ishighly turbulent and must be modeled with sufficient accuracy. To address this\, the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique is employed. Furthermore\, novel methods for generating wind gusts within numerical simulations were developed and rigorously tested.On the structural side\, a collaboration with experts from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) enabled the use of a specialized solver for highly deformable membrane-like structures. The coupling between fluid and structure is implemented in a fully two-way manner. The approach was applied to two classical structural designs. DESCRIPTION:Scientific Talk (4:00 PM to 5:00 PM): Julio Gutiérrez (HSU) \n\n\n\nStudy of nozzle influence on aerosol deposition (AD) by using 3D CFD simulationsIn aerosol deposition\, fine ceramic powders in sizes of less than typically 5 μm are deposited as a coating at room temperature. Aerosol deposition must be performed under a vacuum to apply such fine powders and avoid bow shock effects. According to experimental results\, coating formation by aerosol deposition only occurs if particle velocities exceed a material-specific threshold velocity. Thus\, knowledge of attained particle velocities over acceleration in the nozzle and under the expansion into a vacuum is essential for deriving conditions for successful deposition. In the present study\, 3D-CFD simulations were used to investigate the key geometrical variables in powder acceleration. Three different nozzle geometries were investigated: a convergent nozzle\, a convergent-divergent nozzle\, and a convergent nozzle followed by a constant cross-section toward the exit. In addition\, these three nozzle geometries were optimized to maximize the particle impact velocity. The results show that the convergent-divergent nozzle supplies the highest particle velocities within this comparison. The particle velocities attained by the other nozzles are substantially lower but could be improved by geometry. \n\n\n\nHPC Café (5:00 PM to 6:00 PM): Piet Jarmatz (HSU)\n\n\n\nImmediately after the talk\, the HPC Café will take place. \n\n\n\nWhat is the HPC Café? The goal of this new format is peer-to-peer learning within the community. DESCRIPTION:Katharina Goldberg (HSU) – Legal Introduction to the AI ActThe AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 13 June 2024. This regulation was preceded by many years of preparation\, discussions and lobbying by various interest groups. The result is a 144-page regulation that does not convince all legal experts and is currently the subject of much debate in specialist circles.This presentation will provide an overview of the basic regulatory structure of the AI Act\, its (future) areas of application\, the legal consequences of categorising AI systems into the various risk groups and the new players for AI governance created by the AI Act.The term “AI system” will be discussed first. The regulation has created a new definition here\, which will be used in all EU member states in the future to define technical systems. In addition\, the AI Regulation refers to the European standardization organizations CEN\, CENELEC and ETSI\, which will be responsible for formulating technical standards for the use of AI in the future. From a legal perspective\, this is problematic because it means that important (definitional) decisions are taken away from the democratic legislator and entrusted to expert bodies.For the regulation of the different types of AI\, the regulation distinguishes between AI applications with an unacceptable risk\, which are generally prohibited\, and those of different risk categories\, which are generally permitted. The prohibited category includes AI applications that manipulate human behaviour\, use real-time remote biometric identification in public places and are used for social scoring. AI applications are on the other hand permitted in different graded risk categories: High-risk applications\, General-purpose AI\, Limited Risk AI and Minimal Risk AI. The use of AI in these risk groups is subject to graduated requirements (risk-based approach). The presentation will present these distinctions and outline their legal consequences.A new governance structure for AI in the EU will also be created. Future actors are the AI Office\, the European Artificial Intelligence Board\, the Advisory Forum and the Scientific Panel of Independent Experts. The member states must also appoint competent national authorities. The presentation will also address the tasks of these actors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFelix Gehlhoff – Working on the Edge: Harnessing AI at the Frontier of Professional InnovationsThis presentation delves into the expanding role of AI across various professional and creative domains. The discussion will cover the broad capabilities and potential risks of integrating AI into modern practices. The analogy of treating AI like a person will be highlighted\, emphasizing AI’s proficiency in language-based tasks and its implications for educational contexts. However\, the physical principle of the method was not fully understood until 2005. Numerical simulations are used to better understand acquired datasets and improve data evaluation by introducing new evaluation procedures and using existing machine learning methods. \n\n\n\nLizzie Neumann: Confounder-adjusted Covariances of System Outputs and Applications to Structural Health MonitoringAutomated damage detection is integral to structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. However\, changes in the data result not only from damage but also from environmental or operational influences. Consequently\, it is necessary to determine the confounding factors and remove their effects from the measurements or extracted features. Methods used so far\, however\, neglect potential changes in higher-order statistical moments\, although the output covariances are essential for generating reliable diagnostics for damage detection. We propose an approach that explicitly quantifies changes in the covariance using conditional covariance matrices\, and we apply the method toreal-world bridge data. Our results show that temperature changes affect the covariances of sensor measurements and natural frequencies. By combining our new approach with standard methodsfor damage detection\, we can generate more reliable diagnostic values and fewer false alarms.
