Diverse Hydrogen Applications for Space Missions
7. Okt @ 16:00 - 17:30
Excerpts from 1979 Video “Fire in the Water”
Prof. Dr. Robert Bowman
Oak Ridge National Lab
The various roles of hydrogen in space flight missions are identified and discussed. The preeminent position of hydrogen as rocket fuel in launch vehicles is explained and its history for flight operation is reviewed. The cryogenic aspects of hydrogen for cooling scientific instruments and other applications during flight missions are covered as is the technology of Nickel-Hydrogen batteries that enabled long duration projects. Other lesser known and highly specialized applications of hydrogen and metal hydrides will be described as well. These topics will be immediately followed by excerpts from a 1979 TV news station feature film entitled „FIRE IN THE WATER”. The portions in this video relating to applications of metal hydrides, space & aviation applications, and fuel cells will be shown. It was repeatedly predicted throughout this video that by the year 2000 or so, hydrogen would be a major (if not dominant) contributor to the world’s energy requirements. Following the video, an brief examination and discussion on why these predictions haven’t happened yet will be conclude this presentation.
