Description
The consecutive bachelor’s and master’s programmes in logistics at Helmut-Schmidt-Universität are unique in Germany and provide students with in-depth skills in both technical and quantitative logistics. The bachelor’s and master’s programmes in logistics give students a broad background in economics and engineering.
Both programmes are intensive study programmes. Students can graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree after two and a quarter years and with a Master of Science degree after four years.
Design exercises and laboratory work in engineering subjects help students to put theories into practice and to apply methods, procedures and tools.
Due to the busy schedule of students in the bachelor’s programme in logistics, study abroad is not possible. While it is not compulsory in the master’s programme either, it is recommended.
Program Structure
Studies at Helmut-Schmidt-Universität start in early October. The academic year is divided into autumn, winter and spring trimesters, each of which lasts twelve weeks. The lecture-free period from July to September is for examinations, papers, final theses, summer modules, internships, and study abroad. Students may also use the lecture-free periods for holidays and leisure.
Each programme consists of modules that end with an examination. Information on the examination is provided in the module handbook. Students who pass the examination receive a set number of credit points and a grade. Every credit point brings students closer to the total number of credit points required for graduation. Students at the University require 180 credit points for a bachelor’s degree and an additional 120 credit points for a master’s degree. The final grade is calculated on the basis of the grades students have received for all the module examinations they have passed.
The degree programmes in logistics consist of modules. Modules are study units on specific topics with a set duration. They are stepping stones towards programme objectives. A module covers related content and can consist of one or several courses. Modules are usually completed in one trimester. In some cases, modules may be spread over two trimesters or, in some cases, even over three trimesters. Students obtain credit points (ECTS credits) for each module they complete. The number of the credits is based on the average workload including course attendance, preparatory and follow-up work, practical elements, and examinations. The degree programmes in logistics consist of compulsory modules, elective modules, and a thesis paper.
Most of the courses, in particular in the bachelor’s programme, take the form of lectures and exercises. Seminars are also offered in which students work together on special issues. Where possible, all courses include a variety of learning methods such as economic experiments, the study of relevant literature, and laboratory work.
