This process is called <strong>\u201cAnmeldung\u201d<\/strong> and must be done <strong>within two weeks<\/strong> after moving into your accommodation in Hamburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The registration is required by German law and is essential for many important processes, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applying for a <strong>residence permit<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opening a <strong>bank account<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signing up for <strong>health insurance<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving <strong>official letters or parcels<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Getting your <strong>tax identification number<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your stay is <strong>shorter than 90 days<\/strong>, you <strong>do not<\/strong> need to register at the Einwohnermeldeamt. However, we still recommend checking your visa\/residence regulations in case specific requirements apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When and where to register?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must register <strong>within 14 days<\/strong> of moving into your accommodation. This is done at a <strong>Hamburg Service Point<\/strong> (Einwohnermeldeamt). Registration is only possible <strong>by appointment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appointments can be booked by phone (<strong>Mon\u2013Fri from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.<\/strong> at the universal <strong>service hotline 115<\/strong>) or online via this platform:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/serviceportal.hamburg.de\/HamburgGateway\/service\/entry\/digitermin\" rel='nofollow'>https:\/\/serviceportal.hamburg.de\/HamburgGateway\/service\/entry\/digitermin<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Choose: <strong>Einwohnerwesen<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Wohnsitz\u00e4nderung<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Umzug nach Hamburg aus dem Ausland melden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> New appointment slots are released <strong>early every morning<\/strong> for the same day. So, if you only see appointments available in 2 months, don\u2019t panic \u2013 check again early the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The Hamburg-Wandsbek registration office is the closest location to Helmut-Schmidt-University.<br>It can be easily reached by bus (lines X22, 10, or 263) and is located directly across from the bus stop \u201eWandsbek Markt.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find more information here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamburg.com\/residents\/civil-services-guide\/hamburg-service-vor-ort\/residents-973484\" rel='nofollow'>https:\/\/www.hamburg.com\/residents\/civil-services-guide\/hamburg-service-vor-ort\/residents-973484<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Documents you need<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring the following documents to your appointment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsu-hh.de\/auslandsstud\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/767\/2025\/08\/wohnungsgeberbestaetigung-pdf-data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wohnungsgeberbest\u00e4tigung<\/a> (Landlord Confirmation Form)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This form confirms that you\u2019ve moved into a specific address. It must be filled out by the person responsible for your housing (not by the International Office).<br>At <abbr title=\"Helmut-Schmidt-Universit\u00e4t\">HSU<\/abbr>, this is usually the <strong>\u201cSpie\u00df\u201d of your accomodation (Alpha, Bravo, or Charlie)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Enrollment Certificate from <abbr title=\"Helmut-Schmidt-Universit\u00e4t\">HSU<\/abbr><\/strong><br><br>Issued by the Examination Office and can be picked up at the <strong>International Office<\/strong>. This document confirms your status as a student at <abbr title=\"Helmut-Schmidt-Universit\u00e4t\">HSU<\/abbr> and the period of your enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Passport or National ID Card<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(If applicable) <strong>Visa<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important notes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>International Office does NOT fill out<\/strong> the Wohnungsgeberbest\u00e4tigung. Please contact your housing supervisor (Battalion A\/B\/C).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must register within <strong>14 days<\/strong> of moving into your accommodation. Failure to do so may result in a fine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After registering, you will receive a <strong>Meldebest\u00e4tigung<\/strong> (confirmation of registration). Keep this document safe \u2013 it is needed for many official purposes (e.g., applying for your residence permit or opening a bank account).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A few weeks after registration, you will receive your <strong>German tax identification number (Steuer-ID)<\/strong> <strong>by post<\/strong>. This number is <strong>valid for life<\/strong> and will be important if you plan to work or live in Germany in the future. This letter is often delivered to the <strong>International Office<\/strong>. We will notify you as soon as it arrives, and you can pick it up from us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do I need to deregister before leaving Germany?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yes, deregistration (\u201cAbmeldung\u201d) is mandatory if you are leaving Germany permanently.<\/strong> The deregistration should be completed <strong>at least one week before your departure<\/strong>. You can usually do this <strong>online<\/strong> or <strong>in person at your local registration office<\/strong>.<br>The necessary <strong>form can be found in the download section<\/strong> of the Permit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Details<\/summary>\n<p><strong>Who needs a residence permit?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EU\/EEA\/Swiss students do not need a residence permit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-EU\/EEA students usually enter Germany with a student visa issued by the German embassy in their home-country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students from certain countries (e.g. Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand,\u00a0United Kingdom Great Britain and Northern Ireland) may enter without a visa and then apply for a residence permit directly after arrival in Hamburg.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are staying in Germany for more than 90 days (one trimester or longer), you must apply for a residence permit for study purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When to apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply as soon as possible after arrival in Hamburg.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you already have a visa for study purposes, you must apply for a residence permit before your visa expires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students entering without a visa (see above) must apply for a residence permit within the first 90 days after arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Register your address (Anmeldung) at a Hamburg Service Point (Einwohnermeldeamt)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is the first step after moving into your accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will receive a confirmation of registration (\u201cMeldebest\u00e4tigung\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"
